Learning Objectives
After completing this course you’ll be able to:
- List 4 major reasons an individual seeks out dental treatment.
- Distinguish between transitory and chronic malodor.
- Explain why the problem of oral malodor has been largely ignored by the dental community.
- Provide a socioeconomic perspective to the problem of oral malodor.
- List seven common sources/causes of malodor.
- Explain the pathogenesis of oral malodor in periodontally healthy patients as well as in patients with periodontal disease.
- Define psychogenic halitosis and describe olfactory reference syndrome.
- List 4 means of identifying oral malodor.
- Outline the mechanical deplaquing and chemotherapeutic approach to the management of oral malodor.
- Outline the clinical protocol for oral malodor management and aesthetic assessment.
- Ask medical history questions of the patient regarding oral hygiene, diet, medications etc. to diagnose halitosis.
